Female Head - by Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo's work in optics led naturally to studies of the interrelationships between light and shadow. He goes from his studio into the open air and develops new recommendations, which are then applied in his own practice. He cautions against harsh lighting and outlines that are too sharp. He seeks a transparency of shadow around the head that relates the figures to their environments.
